Hi, guys —

  • Can you give me information on how to discern a Catholic speaker?

I have been asked to attend a conference in which I have heard that the two main speakers are dissidents of the Church.

I need trustworthy sources so I can provide this information to our priest and our high school superintendent, so they will not allow the Church and school to send people to hear false teachings.

The names of the speakers are:

  • Sr. Fran Ferder and
  • Fr. John Heagle

Thanks,

Sharon

Eric replied:

Hi Sharon,

It sounds to me like you need to obtain objective evidence that these two speakers are dissidents in order to present to your priest and superintendent, who I presume do not necessarily trust your judgment.

I suspect the only way to do this is to find written statements of theirs, or at least verifiable oral statements, that contradict one or more specific points of Catholic doctrine. Present both the statements and the documents they contradict to your priest and superintendent. If you can't determine the documents that the statements contradict, we can help you find them, given the suspect statement of the speakers.

As for finding statements from the speakers, you might try Google, or see if they've written books, or call the organizers of the conference and express interest in learning more about the speakers (don't lie, but speak positively and enthusiastically — don't act suspicious).

Unfortunately, I myself have never heard of these two speakers. Perhaps one of my colleagues has.

I am sorry I could not be of more help. I may know someone who knows of these people so I will ask around and let you know if I hear anything about them.

  • By the way, may I ask what kind of conference it is?

That may help put these two in the proper context.

Yours in Christ,

Eric

As a follow-up: In the April 5th 2001 issue of the Wanderer in an article titled:

"Training the Trainers"

it was stated:

"In her deposition in the case concerning convicted pedophile Fr. Paul Conn, Ferder testified under oath that she dissents from The Catechism of the Catholic Church's teaching on homosexuality."

(P. Likoudis, "Training the Trainers" The Wanderer (April 8, 2001)

The first teaching of the Church is widely known and should require no proof (it's in the Catechism anyway); the second is in the document Ordinatio Sacerdotalis.

Hi, Sharon —

As a follow-up to what Eric has said:

In a Wanderer Press article:

"Dissidents Advance Usual Agenda", by P. Likoudis

he states:

Dr. [Robert] Ludwig, director of university ministry and professor of Catholic studies at De Paul University in Chicago, author of Reconstructing Catholicism for a New Generation, is an expert at "deconstructing Catholicism" — as his signature in support on the Voice of the Faithful petition indicates. It appears there with some of the most notorious Catholic dissenters in the United States, including Sr. Margaret Farley, R.S.M., of Yale, a radical feminist.

Ludwig's appearance in Des Moines, along with the recent appearances of high-profile dissidents in other dioceses — such as Australian ex-priest Michael Morwood in Los Angeles, New Age proselytizer Sr. Jose Hobday in Altoona-Johnstown, Pa., Sr. Fran Ferder and Fr. John Heagle in Boise, Idaho — not only demonstrates the commitment of a significant number of bishops to the ongoing destruction of the Church in America, but most importantly signals the determination of the hijackers of Vatican II to take advantage of the sex abuse scandals to maintain control and continue Amchurch's triumphal march.

(Note: Amchurch was coined by Malachi Martin as referring to those who oppose the Catholic magisterium.)

The growing controversy generated by the sudden rise of Voice of the Faithful, and declarations from bishops in five states that VOTF (Voice of the Faithful) will not be allowed in their dioceses, also highlights the vast chasm that already exists among bishops and priests which so many Church leaders try to ignore or pretend does not exist.

Ludwig's book, Reconstructing Catholicism, wrote Geraldine Stafford in Homiletic and Pastoral Review (November 2000) in part two of "Why Johnny Doesn't Believe," takes its place among those of other professional religious educators who are attempting to reach "Generation X" by subverting The Catechism of the Catholic Church and insinuating that the Church's doctrines are irrelevant.

P. Likoudis, "Dissidents Advance Usual Agenda" The Wanderer (October 24, 2002)

A faithful Catholic speaker will always:

  • submit totally to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church and the Papacy
  • believe in all the Conciliar Catholic councils from Nicea to Vatican II, and
  • encourage:
    • Eucharistic Adoration
    • Reading the Scriptures
    • Praying the Rosary, and
    • living a sacramental live, at minimum, attending weekly Mass and if possible, daily Mass and
  • should have a solid knowledge of the Early Church Fathers, the very first Christians.
