Hi, guys—

This is not a faith sharing, salvation, or liturgy question, but I noticed you mentioned Malachi Martin's endorsement of a book on your site.

  • I was wondering what you think about it?
    i.e. How accurate is it?

I am discerning a vocation to the priesthood and was looking into the Jesuits. If you know anything about this, I would really appreciate it if you could help out.

God Bless all of you at C-PATS/AskACatholic.com,

Mark Hornbacher

  { Seeing I'm looking into the Jesuits, what do you think about Malachi Martin's book, Windswept House? }

Eric replied:

Mark —

I read the book (Windswept House) many years ago, but that was before I found out that Martin committed adultery in his position in Rome and seems to have a problem in that department.
It was also before I was aware of his conspiratorial tendencies and traditionalist proclivities.
There has also been some playing fast and loose with the truth. Undoubtedly, the Jesuits are in bad shape.

It's possible what he says in there is largely true — and it's not inconsistent with the other evidence I've heard about the Jesuits — but Martin doesn't have the kind of reputation that makes me comfortable with accepting what he says without reservation.

Martin was laicized under suspicious circumstances, which tells me something about him, especially since he claimed he still had his priestly faculties, with a special status direct from the Pope.

Mark —

I am not familiar with his book on the Jesuits, but I would suggest you meet the Jesuits for yourself, and establish some relationships with the Order directly in order to discern it. I know there are questionable types within, but I have also met good Jesuits along the way.

Ultimately, you must pray for God's guidance in discerning your calling.

Peace,

Bob K.
