Rebecca Mickan wrote:

Hi, guys —

My name is Rebecca and I'm doing an assignment for my year-12 certificate in Study of Religion.

I have chosen to give a presentation on how modern society has changed and affected the image, we, as Christians, and others, have of God.

Unfortunately, I have had a little more trouble than I anticipated in finding information about this rather large topic.

  • If you have any ideas, or can point me in the right direction. I would much appreciate it.

God Bless,

Rebecca Mickan

Mike replied:

Hi Rebecca,

I would approach the question from a different angle and ask:

  • How have we allowed modern society to affect the image, we, as Christians,
    and others view God?

The practicing Christian will always be in a prayerful, studious, militant mode. It is when we let down our guard that modern society takes control of our lives. Before we blame "modern society" for our shortcomings, we should look inward. That society consists of people like us!

If one doesn't believe in God by word and deeds, they'll believe in anything. Their life will be similar to "the foundation of sand" Matthew talked about in his Gospel. (Matthew 7:26)

From this viewpoint, you can approach the issue from numerous angles, based on the various religious beliefs people have in America, and asking if the "believer" is fulfilling [his/her] religious commitment or abandoning it permissively.

  • Are they Catholic in name only . . . dissenting from Church Teachings?
  • Are they Christian in name only . . . not following or obeying the Bible and basis Christian principles?
  • Do they support abortion?
  • Do they support active homosexual activity and related groups
  • Are they against supporting Traditional marriage between one man and one woman?

One common belief all "believers of God" have, is prayer.

  • If we don't pray and ask for God's help, how can the "You have no right to tell me what to do" modern society not mow us down?

I hope this helps and gives you a different approach to start from.

  • It probably won't make your presentation the most comfortable for your audience to receive, but . . . did Jesus come into the world for His own comfort or did He come to serve all mankind and lay His Life down for the salvation of all?
  • If He came for the latter, shouldn't we follow His example and live Catholic Christian lives by word and deed?

Mike

Mary Ann replied:

Hi Becky,

I think that is a thought topic for which you would use your own ideas and would only use citations for examples of the changes you are talking about.

Rebecca replied:

Thank you so much for your help and guidance with my question and my assignment.

I have found it very informative and useful.

It is great that there are good, Christian leaders willing to help young people strengthen their relationship with God and the Church.

Sincerely,

Rebecca
