James Alexander wrote:

Hi, guys —

I have several questions concerning your Faith. I am a Non-denominational Christian. I will start with this,

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, . . . 2 Timothy 3:16.

If she was sinless she would be the equivalent of Jesus. Nowhere in the Bible does it say she was sinless. It only states,

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Luke 1:30

I also read on one of the posts that Catholics believe Mary was taken to Heaven body and soul.

No where in the Bible does it state this. On that post, the person responding to the question quoted Revelation 12. I assume the person was insinuating that the woman holding the child was Mary. The woman holding the child symbolizes Israel, not Mary. Mary was a vessel God used for his purpose — nothing more.

Also the Catholic Church idolizes the Pope. He is merely a man just like me.

3 Do not have any other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in Heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

Exodus 20:3-5

The Bible is the only thing that tells us what sin is (in the Ten Commandments) and explains how to atone for those sins through receiving Jesus Christ. The Bible is the only God-breathed thing we have on Earth — not the Catechism. Basing a religion around any book but the Bible i.e.

  • Mormons — The Book of Mormon and the Bible
  • Catholics — the Catechism and the Bible

is entirely wrong.

The Bible never mentions Purgatory. I assume you get the information about Purgatory from either the Catechism or another book that was written that is not God-breathed. By saying that one needs to go to a holding place to be further purified is basically saying that Jesus' Death and Resurrection wasn't enough. That one would have to wait for further purification assumes that the blood of Jesus was in vain.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

He is a man just like me. And then, you must perform works to receive forgiveness. None of that is Scriptural.

5 There is one God. There is also one mediator between God and human beings-a human, the Messiah Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5

It just seems to me that the Catholic church among many others is the Bible plus something else. Anytime a religion believes in 'the Bible plus something' or 'the Bible minus something', it is wrong.

I recently read a book called Revelation Unveiled by Timothy LaHaye. In this book, the author explains more fallacies relating to the Catholic Church.

I know I have listed a lot of questions but I still have many more.

Thank you for your time.

James

  { Based on what I've read, can you answer a list of questions from a Non-denominational Christian? }

Mike replied:

Hi James,

You've ask a lot of questions. That's good. It shows you seek wisdom and knowledge.

Although you are over the five question limit, because I don't consider your e-mail a buckshot e-mail, I have hyper linking them to answers we have given in the past.

My primary concern is the source of some of your information.

Timothy LaHaye is the author of the Left Behind series of books.
The bishops of Illinois have publicly called his material anti-Catholic.

You said:
I have several questions concerning your faith.

If you have questions about our faith, reading anti-Catholic material will not give you an objective view.

If you want a truly Catholic view of the many issues you have brought up, instead of reading a book Revelation Unveiled by Timothy LaHaye, I would recommend you read a book,

This will answer most of the questions that you have asked in your e-mail.

Also, if you didn't see it already, check out my:

Catholic Scripture verses that defend Catholic doctrines.

Finally, We have to remember, historically, the Bible was written by Catholics and their ancestors, for Catholics, for use in the Catholic Mass. Read this posting:

Are you exclusionary saying, "the Bible was written by Catholics, for Catholics, for use in the Catholic Mass"?

Hope this helps,

Mike

James replied:

Mike,

Regardless if Timothy LaHaye is known as anti-Catholic, he brings up interesting points in the beliefs of Catholics that don't line up with Scripture.

When you say that the Bible was written by Catholics, that is false. The Bible was written by Jews. It might have been translated eventually by Catholics but was not written by them.

I will take your advice and get a copy of the book. Please don't think I am trying to start an argument. I wonder how people justify the things they do when they don't line up with Scripture.

James

Mike replied:

Hi James,

Don't worry about the way you come across. That's not a problem.

Your first statement makes no sense. If someone doesn't like another person or organization, of course, they can fabricate all the interesting points they want. The question is whether these interesting points are true or not.

Catholic's can historically show that the books of the Old Testament were written by the Old Testament prophets and writers.

At the time, when Paul was writing his epistle (2 Timothy 3:16), there was no known New Testament canon or measuring rod.

By 100 A.D. all the books were written but no one knew which one's were inspired and which ones were not, not until 382 A.D. at the council of Rome. There, the decision of which books would make up the New Testament was made by Catholic bishops guided by the Holy Spirit.

That's just basic history you can look up in an objective Church history book.

Every time a Protestant Christian opens their Bible to read it, they are implicitly saying,

I trust the decision that Catholic bishops, guided by the Holy Spirit, made on which books make up the Bible that I have it in my hand.

Yes, the Old Testament books were written by Jews. I would consider them our ancestors.

They obviously couldn't be literal Catholics because Our Lord had not come yet to establish His One Church on St. Peter and His Successors (Matthew 16:13-19). They are the chosen people who Our Lord said, Salvation comes from the Jews. (John 4:22) The chosen people called to pave the way for the Lord, the Jewish Jesus!

They are our elder brothers, but they have not accepted the fullness of the Faith in Jesus' One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

To be Catholic is to be a fulfilled Jew.

Many are unaware of the similarities between the Catholic and Jewish faith. You can find out more here:

You said:

Then you must not believe in the Trinity or the Bible, because neither the words Trinity nor Bible are in the Bible.

  • What does the Bible say is the pillar and bulwark of Truth?

Let's look at 1 Timothy 3:15 and Matthew 16:13-19.

  • The Church came before the Bible.
  • The Bible didn't come before the Church.

In my opinion, what you should focus on is what came after the Church but before the Bible:

The Early Church Fathers — the very first Christians after the Apostles.

Find out how the apostles instructed their followers and successors!

I hope this helps.

Mike
