Hi, guys —

Global warming causes the water to rise on the beaches of the world.

In the Bible it says somewhere around the book of Wisdom, or Psalms, that the waters of the oceans shall never cross their barriers, but to the contrary, global warming is doing this.

What's up?

Eric replied:

Allen,

First of all, what you are speaking of is predicted on the basis of models that make lots of wild assumptions. As far as I know, global warming hasn't yet dramatically affected the ocean levels and even if it has (or will), you're speaking of references in the Psalms, which are poetic and not to be taken in a scientific or literal manner.

The point is that in the typical experience of an individual, the ocean boundaries don't appreciably move, but are stable. Despite the vastness and chaos of the ocean, from day to day it maintains predictable boundaries. After a storm, it returns to where it was before. The intent is not to say that the coastlines will never, ever change until the end of time.

If the effects of global warming really bother you, just consider that God has moved the boundaries. It doesn't say that the boundaries will never change, only that the ocean doesn't move beyond them.

Eric
