Thomas wrote:

Good morning!

Yesterday, we heard about St. John the Baptist baptizing of the people.

  • Were these people Jews or Gentiles?

I know that Jews were often called to repent for their sins in the Old Testament.

  • If they were Jews, was Baptism by water given to these Jews in the Old Testament when they were asked to repent?
  • If not, are not these people the first Christians — baptized with water in the name of Jesus?

Thanks for any help you can provide on this issue.

God bless,

Tom

Mary Ann replied:

Tom —

John's baptism was a baptism of repentance, not of regeneration. It prepared those who received his baptism, to receive the Word of God and to accept Christ.

Many of them were probably later, among the first Christians.

Mary Ann
