Hi, guys —

Recently, I've seen documentaries about scientific theories on the creation of the universe, from the big bang to the M-theory and parallel universes.

These are the scientific (beliefs|theories) today but they make no place for God, or at least no place for the Bible.  I've also done research which says that religious beliefs and the sensations of God's presence can be stimulated artificially using technology . . . by stimulating the right side of the brain.

The exact name is the god helmet. (Wikipedia)

All of this appears to be very weird and, if I can say, threatening to my beliefs and faith.

  • Can you help me make sense of this?

Houssam

  { How do I make sense of scientific theories on the creation of the universe that hinder my faith? }

Paul replied:

Dear Houssam,

Thanks for the important questions.

First, the theories of the universe and its origins that you mention are basically theories of
what is and of how it may have evolved. Nowhere in these theories is God rejected. In fact, these theories point to the necessity of God as being the Source, Origin, and First Cause of all that is.

Science doesn't mention God because that which is above or outside of physics is above and outside of the scientific realm; but science points to God as Creator, Sustainer, and Primary Cause of it all.

While the stimulation of the brain may cause certain sensations to the person, this is no sign of why these intuitions or feelings come to us without such artificial stimulations. It also doesn't answer the question as to why our brains are made this way. In other words, perhaps God created our brains to be impacted this way, to enable us bodily creatures to experience God's presence intuitively. These experiments also speak nothing of whether or not God exists.

Just the fact that we exist, or that anything exists, clearly points to God as the Uncaused Cause of it all. Just like reason can extrapolate that there is a painter by virtue of seeing a painting;
so too, reason can see that there is a Creator (God) by virtue of there being a creation.

Peace,

Paul
