Hi, guys —

My son goes to a Catholic school and was given a homework assignment to watch the movie

Zeitgeist: Greatest Story Ever Told.

He's confused because the storyline contains people with the same story as Jesus Christ but who lived long before Our Lord.

  • How do I categorize these people that came before Jesus Christ?
  • Are they:
    • myths
    • legends
    • prophets, or
    • just mere stories that didn't really occur?

He is also asking how can we be sure that the story of Jesus Christ really occurred.

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Carrie —

There are many pagan myths of fertility gods who die and rise. The human spirit saw the cycle of nature, felt its own immortality, and longed for the promise of resurrection. It expressed this intimation of God's plan in the mythical stories that explained natural cycles.

However, there is only one historical personage who died and rose. We are as sure of the historical existence and death of Jesus Christ as we are of Julius Caesar. The same sources state his Resurrection.

Mary Ann,

Thank you for the information.
